What is organic composting?
What is organic composting?

Did you know? The management of organic kitchen/household waste is a growing dilemma the world over. Not only can it generate unpleasant odours and attract rats, flies, bugs, and mosquitoes if left unaddressed, it also generates methane as it decomposes, which contributes significantly to global warming!

If you’ve grown up with a mom or dad who loves gardening, chances are you’ve been exposed to, or at least heard about, composting! For some growing up, there was a compost heap in the backyard, which provided compost that was added to the soil to help plants grow. For others, it may be an entirely new concept.

So, what is it? Composting is the natural process of recycling organic matter, such as food scraps or leaves, to make fertiliser that can enrich the soil in your garden and pot plants. Fondly referred to by farmers as “black gold”, organic compost is rich in nutrients, making it perfect for agriculture – on a large and small scale – as well as gardening and horticulture.

Introducing Whole Earth Recycling Organic Farm

Whole Earth Recycling now offers a composting solution for all of your organic kitchen waste, taking the hard (and sometimes dirty) work out of making organic compost. We collect, take it to the farm and compost it, and deliver back to you as a 2kg bag of nutrient rich compost for use in your garden, vegetable patch, and pot plants.

Why is it important?

Because food and organic waste that isn’t composted produces methane, a super harmful greenhouse gas which is 80 times more powerful at warming the atmosphere over a 20-year period than carbon dioxide!

We’re keeping things local for now as we roll this service out to selected suburbs in Johannesburg, but we hope to extend the offering further afield as soon as we’re able to!
